Costanera Sur is a new lung for the capital and a space for citizens to take ownership of

Asuncion, IP Agency.- With the official opening of the Avenida Costanera, citizens gain a new space facing the Paraguay River. In addition to easing traffic, the project includes recreational spaces and a green lung for the city of Asunción.

“The important thing is that citizens take ownership of this public space so they can come and share it with their families. There are recreational spaces to go out and enjoy, which is the wonder of this Paraguay River,” said President Santiago Peña minutes before the inaugural bike ride.

“It is the most beautiful waterfront we have in Paraguay,” he stressed, while indicating that the work is a vindication for Asunción and so that the city no longer turns its back on the river.

The Costanera Sur avenue is a new road that runs along the Paraguay River, from Avenida Colón to Cerro Lambaré. The 8.1 km route thus completes the project to surround the river and the Bay of Asunción with the first stage of the Costanera de Asunción and the Costanera Norte.

This Saturday, the space was officially opened with a bike ride attended by President Santiago Peña, the Minister of Public Works, Claudia Centurión, the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Raúl Latorre, municipal authorities and more.

The this saturday’s agenda includes sports exhibitions, activities for the whole family, displays of antique vehicles and the inauguration of the amphitheater on site with a concert by Tierra Adentro at 4:00 p.m.

Environmental and social component

The MOPC minister stressed that the project covers all aspects: in addition to traffic, it has an environmental component, with a linear park with 6,000 reforested seedlings, and a social component, since 1,500 homes will be built for the New Tacumbú Neighborhood.

The project included the refilling of the avenue and other areas to a non-floodable level, which allows the city to gain this space for housing for the riverside populations and other projects.

On the South Coast

The project took three years to build, with the work of filling the river 1.5 meters above the river level, temporary relocations, the construction of the avenue and a linear park.

The linear park extends for 1,000 meters with a sector for food service establishments, playgrounds, sand volleyball courts and an amphitheater for events.

The avenue has a bike path and wide sidewalks for citizens to enjoy.

Thirteen bus bays were also included along the avenue for a future project that includes public transportation service in this part of Avda. Costanera.
