Costa Rica‘s first division football league became the first in Central America and the third in CONCACAF to establish video refereeing (VAR).

The Costa Rican first division football league became the first division on September 10 the first in Central America and the third in Concacaf to establish video arbitration (VAR)technology that was debuted with a penalty play in the match between Liberia and Cartaginés.
Referee Juan Gabriel Calderón was called by the VAR, in charge of referee Steven Madrigal, to review a play in which Cartaginés goalkeeper Kevin Briceño brought down an opponent inside the area at the Edgardo Baltonado stadium, in the province of Guanacaste (west), home of Liberia.
After reviewing the score on the screen, Calderón decided to award the penalty, which was converted into a goal by Marvin Angulo in the 37th minute, thus opening the scoring in this match corresponding to the ninth round of the Apertura Tournament, which ended with a 3-0 victory for Liberia.
In this way the Costa Rican League became the third country in Concacaf to have VAR, after the United States and Mexico.
For the implementation of VAR in Costa Rica, 30 VAR referees, 8 VAR assistants and 4 operators were certified, and technological support will be provided by the company Quality, in charge of the entire platform, from the cameras to the operators in the booths.
Before the official implementation, tests and live practices were carried out to ensure the correct functioning of the system.
In Guatemala, talks to implement the VAR have been going on for some years and at the beginning of 2024 the president of the National Football Federation (Fedefut) had mentioned that everything in the country was “ready” to start the project.
However, the price of the service has been one of the drawbacks to date for which it has not been implemented in Guatemala.
