Costa Rica seeks to replicate El Salvador’s security strategy 2024-02-14 14:56:28

El Salvador closed 2023 with a homicide rate of 2.4 per 100,000 inhabitants, while Costa Rica’s was 17.2 in the same period, which has caused the Costa Rican authorities to seek to replicate the security strategy of the Salvadoran Government.

Among the measures to be taken by the president of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chávez, is increasing sentences for minors up to 50 years in prison, building a mega prison like the CECOT in El Salvador, among others.

In a recent survey by the Index firm, Costa Ricans chose Nayib Bukele as their favorite political leader, while Cháves’ popularity plummeted almost 30 percentage points since his election as president.

El Salvador has become a benchmark for security in the Latin American region, since it went from being the most dangerous country to the safest, after declaring an Exception Regime that added to the efforts of the Territorial Control Plan.
