“The Government of the Republic, through me, announces that we are willing to grant political asylum and refuge to both María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia, as well as other politically persecuted people in Venezuela, especially those people who are seeking refuge in the Argentine embassy in Caracas,” Tinoco said in a statement.

The Costa Rican government’s offer comes hours after the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, called for the imprisonment of Machado and González, during a rally in the legislative building.

“There is no negotiation with fascism, the full force of the law is applied to fascism (…) they must go to prison”Rodríguez declared in a special session of the Assembly in relation to the CNE results.
