A total of 20 migrants were injured this Monday in the northern part of Costa Rica, near the border with Nicaragua, when the bus transporting them left the road and overturned, relief authorities reported.

According to the Red Cross report, the accident occurred in the town of San Humberto de Los Chiles, province of Alajuela (north), a few kilometers from the border with Nicaragua, where due to conditions that are being investigated, the bus left the road and fell to a slope about 8 meters deep.

In total, 20 people were transferred to medical centers, of which 2 are in critical condition, 17 in urgent condition and 1 stable. At the moment there are no deaths.

It is one of the buses that provides the legal transportation service for migrants, mostly Venezuelans and Haitians, as part of a program that transports these people through Costa Rican territory from the border with Panama to the border with Nicaragua so that they can continue his way through the American continent.

This is the second bus accident involving migrants that has been recorded in Costa Rica in recent months. The previous one occurred last August when a unit with 63 passengers fell off a cliff in San Ramón, province of Alajuela (north).

On that occasion there were no deaths and 19 people were taken to a hospital, who were discharged a few hours later.

Costa Rica is one of the transit countries for thousands of migrants of nationalities such as Venezuelan, Haitian, Cuban, and several Asian and African nationalities, who cross the American continent in search of reaching the United States.

Data from the Costa Rican Immigration Directorate indicate that at least 436,000 migrants passed through this country of 5.1 million inhabitants in 2023 seeking to reach the United States.
