What is the cost and duration of a Cuban passport in September 2024? Below are details of the latest updates following debates in Parliament.
At the end of July, the Cuban parliament discussed and approved new laws related to Migration, Citizenship and Immigration, introducing several changes in the use of the Cuban passport. What were the main changes? What changed regarding the validity? And the price?
During the sessions of the National Assembly of People’s Power of Cuba, modifications were announced in the use of the Cuban passport, both for citizens within the country and for those residing abroad.
Access to passports was facilitated for descendants of Cubans and the procedures for foreign citizens to obtain one were simplified.
Cost of the Cuban passport currently
As far as the use of passports is concerned, there have been no significant changes: Cubans living abroad must continue to use them as an identity document when entering the country. This means that those with dual nationality will continue to be obliged to enter the island with their Cuban passport, not with that of their second citizenship.
In addition, a new option has been introduced that allows Cubans living abroad to enter the country with only their passport and foreign nationality, provided they formally renounce Cuban nationality. Would you dare to make this decision?
One of the official changes is that ordinary passports will be valid for ten years, both for Cubans who apply for one for personal reasons and for those who live abroad. Additionally, the cumbersome extension period, which only meant an additional expense for Cubans outside the island, was definitively eliminated.
Another important measure is that foreigners with “significant assets” or who intend to invest in Cuba will be able to apply for permanent residence, something that was previously only possible through marriage or if they had children recognized in the country.
Likewise, descendants of grandchildren of Cubans living abroad will also be able to access Cuban passports and citizenship.
Until September 2024, and despite the new laws approved, no changes have been announced in the cost of the Cuban passport.
Although questions about prices and taxes were discussed, the cost remained unchanged. Currently, the Cuban passport has an official price of 180 euros in Europe, 180 dollars in the United States, and in Cuba it still costs 2,500 Cuban pesos.
