Cosmic Convergence in Kalavryta: Unlocking the Secrets of the Universe at the 2024 NEON Observing School

Starting next Wednesday, and for ten days, doctoral students in Astronomy and young astronomers participating in the 2024 NEON Observing School, an educational activity mainly concerned with Observational Astronomy, will be in Kalavryta.

This year’s 2024 NEON Observing School will begin with the participants’ visit to the National Observatory of Athens next Monday, October 14.

Within the framework of the 2024 NEON Observing School new Astronomy PhD students and young astronomers will have the possibility of a hands-on observation experience through professional telescopes. During the school, the Aristarchus Telescope (2.3 meters) in Kalavryta and the Krioneri Telescope in Corinthia (1.2 meters) will be used. Also, data will be taken from the Liverpool Telescope, a 2-meter robotic telescope located in the city of La Palma, Spain.

In a statement, the Mayor of Kalavryta and President of the Regional Union of Municipalities of Western Greece Thanassis Papadopoulos points out that “the hosting of the Astronomy School 2024 NEON Observing School in Kalavryta is yet another proof of the multifaceted development role of our ‘Aristarchos’ Telescope in Helmos and of course another proof of his internationally recognized scientific role in astronomical observations”.

ΤΟ «SCIENCE x FICTION FILM FESTIVAL»

As you know, on the occasion of the presence in the city of Kalavryta of the participants in the 2024 NEON Observing School, the “Science x Fiction Film Festival”, a Film Festival organized this year for the first time, has been planned – during the three days of October 17, 18 and 19.

The screening of the films will take place at the Kalavryta Municipality Multipurpose Cultural Center with free admission for the public. The program of the “Science x Fiction Film Festival” is as follows:

THURSDAY OCTOBER 17

11:00 Observations of the Sun with a telescope at Kalavryton High School.

19:30 Speech by Dr. Ilias Koulouridis with the title: “The Giants of the Universe”.

21:00 Screening of the film “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1977), directed by Steven Spielberg.

FRIDAY OCTOBER 18

19:30 Speech by Dr. Manolis Xylouris with the title: “Modern technological and scientific achievements with the telescopes of the National Observatory of Athens”.

21:00 Screening of the film “Sunshine” (2007), directed by Danny Boyle.

23:00 Night observation of Moon, Jupiter and Saturn.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 19

19:00 Speech by Dr. Lazarou Koutoulidis, entitled: “Tour in the museum of the sky”.

20:00 Pre-movie Gala, meeting the Astronomers.

21:30 Screening of the film “Gattaca” (1997), directed by Andrew Niccol.

It should be noted that the 2024 NEON Observing School will end at noon on Friday, October 25, with the departure of the participants from Kalavryta.
