Corsican Clementines: Quality, Pricing, and Competition in the Market

2023-12-25 19:27:39

In the middle of December, clementines are the stars of the markets. They are found at all prices. The cheapest are all foreign: Moroccan, Spanish and Portuguese. But it is those from Corsica that consumers prefer. Six euros per kilo on average, it is one of the most expensive stalls. It is also one of the most requested, for its sweet and acidic taste which it owes to the very specific climate of Corsica. The fruits are chosen one by one, before being picked by hand with their leaves. No chemicals are added for their preservation, unlike foreign competitors. French clementines only have 48 hours to be marketed, not including labor, which is 40% more expensive than in other producing countries. To remain competitive, the profession had to reduce its margins. With 34,000 tonnes of clementines per year, Corsica must face competition from the Spanish giant. They produce 32 times more: more than a million tonnes. These quantities once once more lower prices at the wholesaler. More details in the video at the top of this article. TF1 | L. Adda, P.
