Washington, USA (CNN) – The US Department of Justice announced, on Friday, that it had indicted the Democratic Senator from New Jersey, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Bob Menendez, and his wife, Nadine Arslanian Menendez, with corruption and bribery in exchange for illegal services to the authorities. Egyptian and 3 other businessmen in the case.

The US prosecution also brought charges once morest 3 other businessmen in the case, including Egyptian-American Wael Hanna, Jose Uribe and Fred Debes.

The indictment stated that hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and gold bullion were found in Menendez’s home, and the indictment indicated the bribes included gold, cash, mortgage payments, and a luxury car.

The Public Prosecution accused Menendez and his wife of receiving bribes from the three businessmen in favor of undeserved services to them and assisting the Egyptian authorities, which included introducing Egyptian military, intelligence and diplomatic officials to Senator Menendez and conveying information regarding American aid to Egypt and information regarding the employees of the American embassy in Cairo.

This is the second time that the US Department of Justice has brought corruption charges once morest Menendez in a decade.

Prosecutors with the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York are investigating whether Menendez, Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, or his wife received undeserved gifts, among other things.

Menendez has strongly denied any wrongdoing. “I think this investigation will lead to absolutely nothing,” he told CNN last April.

Senate Democratic rules would force Menendez to step down as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, but he might still serve on the committee.

CNN has reached out to Menendez’s office in the US Senate for comment.
