Corrosion inhibitors in the treatment of water circuits: Complete file

Industrial water circuits or water networks in the tertiary sector are the site of corrosion, scaling and biological proliferation phenomena. These phenomena generate significant maintenance expenses.

The use of corrosion inhibitors helps reduce these costs by increasing the durability of the equipment present in these circuits.

Among the installations treated, we distinguish:

  • steam generators and steam distribution and condensate return networks;

  • semi-open (recirculating on a cooling tower) or open (waste water) cooling circuits;

  • closed circuits (heating, chilled water, closed cooling);

  • domestic hot and cold water networks.

The equipment affected by corrosion is the water or steam distribution pipes, exchangers, heating surfaces and storage capacities.

This article will allow the designers of these networks, the thermal engineers, the chemists who supervise them, as well as the technicians in charge of their operation, to better understand the role and mode of action of corrosion inhibitors, as well as their application in the different water circuits encountered in industry and the tertiary sector, and their possible interaction with other water treatment products used.

The legislative aspects concerning these different circuits are also discussed:

  • quality limits that the treated water must respect depending on its use: sanitary, technical (cooling, heating) or steam production;

  • quality standards for inhibitors depending on the destination of the treated water;

  • environmental constraints, including drought orders.
