With the Sun Run, which brought together 35,000 runners in Vancouver on April 16, the season for running races and marathons of all kinds is officially launched.
But who says running, often says joint problems or other chronic ailments. Evils that can however be avoided by learning to correct the way you run, as explained by Jean-François Esculier, physiotherapist in Kelowna and assistant clinical professor in the Department of Physiotherapy at the University of British Columbia, co-author of a study on this subject.
The knee is the most commonly injured part of the body in runners. About 50% of runners are injured each year, which is huge for a sport where you are alone. And among these injuries, the knee is the region of the body most often affected.
says Jean-François Esculier to explain the bad reputation that running has in relation to knee wear.
The physiotherapist is also quick to challenge some other myths regarding running, such as the fact that running on hard surfaces is more harmful to our joints from the outset.
We know that the different surfaces, as well as the different shoes with which we run, because a shoe is a bit like a surface, will affect the impact that we will apply to different parts of the legs. But contrary to popular belief, we will have more impact on the knees when running on soft ground or with well-absorbent shoes.
In any case, it is always possible to prevent knee pain or other types of joint problems by correcting the way you run, as demonstrated by the joint study by Université Laval and Université of British Columbia in which Jean-François Esculier participated.
