CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has declared today, Thursday, October 10, Ozone Action Day. Ozone Action Day will be in effect for the Austin, Corpus Christi, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio and Victoria areas.

Recommendations for sensitive groups, such as children, the elderly, people with pre-existing health conditions, and people who regularly spend six or more hours outdoors, suggest minimizing exposure by choosing less strenuous activities or shortening time spent outdoors. At-risk populations may experience health effects such as difficulty breathing, cough, shortness of breath, headaches, nausea, eye and throat irritation, and lung damage.
Here are some tips to limit ozone formation:
- Limit driving or leaving the car running; Instead, carpool, combine tasks, use public transportation, bike, or walk.
- Fill your vehicle’s fuel tank in the late afternoon or evening and do not fill the tank to the top. Maintain your vehicle, including proper tire pressure.
- Postpone yard work until after 6 pm Maintain your lawn equipment, including changing the oil and replacing air filters regularly. Also, consider using non-powered tools. Hand tools, such as scissors, edgers, and push lawn mowers, are lightweight, quiet, easy to use, and produce zero emissions.
- Do not burn yard waste.
