Coronavirus: promising results for a new messenger RNA vaccine created by a Belgian company

The cellular immune response induced by this serum would also be better prepared to fight infections, according to a clinical study conducted on animals. A group of more than 15 scientists has been working on the development of this vaccine since 2020. The results of their work on animals, the results of which therefore seem promising, have been published in the prestigious scientific journal Molecular Therapy.

“Vaccinated people make antibodies once morest the spike protein, which changes rapidly, so that the antibodies no longer protect sufficiently once morest new variants”, explains Professor Niek Sanders from the gene therapy laboratory at UGent. “This is a problem facing current vaccines” once morest the coronavirus.

New vaccines should provide dual protection, through antibodies and a cellular immune response. This means that the body will be armed once morest existing variants of the coronavirus and can reduce the impact of future variants.
