The survey was carried out in eight countries on 8,642 children infected with Covid
Nearly 6% of children infected with Covid-19 reported symptoms 90 days following infection, according to a study published Friday in the medical journal JAMA network.
“We found that in some children the disease is associated with symptoms even three months later,” said researcher Stephen Freedman.
According to the study, symptoms of Covid-19 were seen in 9.8% of children who were hospitalized and in 4.6% of children who were in intensive care following contracting the disease.
“Our results can inform public health decisions regarding strategies for dealing with the spread of Covid-19 in children and screening for Covid-long in people with severe infections,” said fellow researcher Todd Florin.
Earlier reports suggested that 25-58% of children had symptoms months following their illness, although the number of people with Covid-long continues to be higher in adults.
Among the most common symptoms of Covid-long in children are fatigue, weakness, coughing, difficulty breathing or shortness of breath.
“There are no known therapies for long-Covid in children and more research is needed in this area,” Todd Florin explained.
The survey was carried out in eight countries on 8,642 children infected with Covid-19.
In Israel, the peak of the 6th wave of infections has been reached, but new waves might appear as early as this fall.
