Corona virus: In a “summer” outbreak, increasing trends in hospitalizations, the data of the EODY – 2024-08-01 17:11:08

The deaths of patients infected with coronavirus increased to 38 from 35 which was in the previous indication of the Weekly Report of the Epidemiological Surveillance of Respiratory Infections, the EODY announced on Thursday, August 1st.

According to the EODY update, during the period July 22 – July 28, 21 people from 17 compared to the previous record, they are hospitalized intubatedas they were infected with the coronavirus.

Hospital admissions are also showing an upward trend.

No new flu deaths were reported.

Influenza-like illness – ILI (regardless of pathogen)

✓ The number of influenza cases per 1,000 visits remains low.

Severe Acute Respiratory Infection – SARI (regardless of pathogen)

✓ The number of SARI cases per 1,000 visits remains low.

SARS-CoV2 virus – COVID-19 infection

✓ Increased activity of the virus continues to be recorded, with an increasing trend in admissions for hospitalization. Vulnerable population groups (elderly and people with underlying diseases) are advised to scrupulously follow preventive measures against respiratory infections and to seek medical advice in time for symptoms, in order to provide timely treatment. At the same time, it is recommended to the general population, in the presence of respiratory infection symptoms, to limit contacts with people belonging to vulnerable groups.

✓ The positivity in all tested samples showed a slight increase compared to the previous week.

✓ 923 new imports were recorded showing an increasing trend. The average weekly number of new admissions over the previous four weeks was 626, and the number of admissions in the corresponding week in 2023 was 321.

✓ The number of new intubations was 16. The average weekly number of new intubations over the previous four weeks was nine and the number of intubations in the corresponding week of 2023 was nine.

✓ The number of patients with COVID-19 infection who are hospitalized with intubation is 21.

✓ The number of deaths was 38. The average weekly number of deaths in the previous four weeks was 28 and the number of deaths in the corresponding week in 2023 was 26.

✓ An increasing trend of BA.2.86 carrying at least one of the F456L and R346T mutations continues to be recorded, with its predominance during the last weeks. It is noted that this category of mutant strains has not been associated with an increased risk of severe disease.

✓ Surveillance of the viral load in municipal wastewater showed an increase in the circulation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in six of the ten areas tested.

Influenza virus

✓ No positive samples for influenza were found both in the community (PHC Sentinel surveillance network) and in hospitals (SARI surveillance network).

✓ No new serious case with hospitalization in ICU, nor new death from laboratory-confirmed influenza was recorded.

✓ From week 40/2023 to week 30/2024, 149 people with laboratory-confirmed influenza were hospitalized in ICU and 71 deaths from laboratory-confirmed influenza were recorded.

✓ From week 40/2023 to week 30/2024, 1,064 influenza strains have been typed (derived from community Sentinel samples, from SARI surveillance samples and from hospital samples outside surveillance networks), of which 557 (52%) were type A and 507 (48%) type B. From week 10 onwards there is a prevalence of type B, both in the community (Sentinel PHC surveillance network) and in hospitals (SARI surveillance network).

✓ In total, 539 type A strains have been subtyped in the two Influenza Reference Centers. 494 (92%) belonged to subtype A(H1)pdm09 and 45 (8%) to subtype A(H3).

Respiratory syncytial virus – RSV

✓ No positive samples were found both in the community (PHC Sentinel surveillance network) and in hospitals (SARI surveillance network).
