Corona is growing again… Reduced quarantine support

20,000 new cases for the second day… BA.5 Variation-led ‘6th Trend’ Begins

Government to reduce living support for quarantined people from 11th… urgent need for system reorganization

More than 20,000 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported for the second day. The average number of confirmed cases per week doubled. It seems that we have entered the beginning of the 6th epidemic, led by a mutated virus of the Omicron lineage. The amount of support for living expenses and paid vacation expenses paid by the government to those who are quarantined during the re-infestation will be reduced from the 11th. As the number of new confirmed cases is rapidly increasing, the reform of the support system was implemented as announced at the end of June, making it urgent to reorganize the quarantine and leave system in the private sector, including businesses.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) announced that as of 00:00 on the 10th, there were 20,410 new confirmed cases of COVID-19. There were 19 new deaths and 67 people in severe cases.

The number of confirmed cases more than doubled from the same day of the week (3 days, 1048 people) a week ago, and there were 20,000 new confirmed cases for the second day following the 9th. The average number of daily confirmed cases on Sundays and Saturdays, which the quarantine authorities use as a key indicator, nearly doubled from 8,548 between June 26 and July 2 to 15,987 on July 3 and 9.

Looking at the time of the 5th outbreak from Omicron, which started at the end of January, the average weekly number of confirmed cases exceeded 20,000 in early February, and the pandemic began with over 100,000 in late February.

At the time of the 5th epidemic, social distancing was in effect. Social distancing has been lifted since April 18. As the holiday season approaches, the amount of travel is expected to increase.

The transmissibility of the mutated virus also increased. The 5th wave was led by ‘BA.1’, an early omicron mutation, but now it is led by ‘BA.5’, another mutation in the same omicron lineage. In the past four weeks, the proportion of BA.5 infections among domestic confirmed cases has risen rapidly from 0.9% to 24.1%. The radio wave power of ‘BA.2’, originally called ‘Stealth Omicron’, was said to be regarding 30% greater than that of BA.1, but the British Health and Safety Agency (HSA) analyzed that the radio wave power of BA.5 was regarding 35% higher than that of BA.2. However, there is still no vaccine that has been improved for BA.5.
