Corona: 27,677 new infections, 1,062 in the hospital

27,677 new infections were reported in Austria from Tuesday to Wednesday. This is a new high. In the same period there were 14 new corona deaths.

The omicron wave is now also bringing new records in the number of infections in Austria. After 16,685 new infections on Tuesday, there were already 27,677 new infections reported by the Ministry of Health and the Interior on Wednesday. The all-time high so far was 17,006 cases a week ago as the omicron wave picked up steam.

The current massive increase was already apparent in the figures published in the morning in the epidemiological reporting system (EMS), where 31,070 new infections were initially reported from Tuesday to Wednesday. However, this was raw data, as the Ministry of Health emphasized on Wednesday. Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) reported around 30,000 new infections within 24 hours following the Council of Ministers.

On Wednesday, 14 new deaths related to the corona virus were also reported.

Hospital utilization is also increasing with the explosive growth. 1,062 hospital patients were reported on Wednesday, 50 more than on Tuesday. The number of intensive care patients fell slightly from 197 to 193 patients.

The current figures for Austria (as of January 19, 2022, 09:30 a.m.): 27,677 new infections. 1.503.668 confirmed cases. 161,372 active cases. 1.328.340 recovered. 13.956 deaths. 1.062 Hospitalized, of it 193 Intensivpatienten.
