Passengers arriving at Cork Airport last night faced a harrowing landing experience as Storm Éowyn unleashed its fury. Lorraine Carney, a Cork resident returning from Gran Canaria, Spain, recounted the terrifying ordeal, describing the final 30 minutes of the flight as a blur of fear and uncertainty.
“When the pilot went to land, things were absolutely terrifying.I didn’t feel safe at all,” Carney shared, speaking on RTÉ’s Today with Claire Byrne.
Carney vividly described the scene: “The plane was shaking from side to side, you coudl hear the rain battering against windows. It was rain like I’ve never heard before.”
Adding to the chilling atmosphere, Carney recounted a palpable sense of dread gripping the cabin.”It went eerily quiet on board, and some passengers began praying. At one point, there was a collective scream before quiet returned,” she said.
Despite the turbulence, Carney commended Ryanair staff and Captain Jim Allen for keeping passengers informed throughout the ordeal. However, she couldn’t hide her awe at the pilot’s skill, stating, “I don’t know how he landed the plane because it was literally shaking from side to side.”
Even upon touchdown, the plane continued to shudder, causing suitcases to nearly fly out of passengers’ hands.
Cork Airport confirmed via Twitter that flight operations resumed despite a Status Orange wind warning in effect until noon. Passengers traveling throughout the remainder of the day should expect potential delays. See tweet here.
Graeme McQueen, Head of Media Relations at daa, the operator of both Dublin and Cork airports, advised travelers to stay updated with their airlines regarding potential disruptions caused by Storm Éowyn. McQueen noted that Dublin Airport experienced a meaningful reduction in passenger traffic compared to a typical Friday, with only 600 passengers passing through security by 9am, compared to the usual 10,000.
belfast International Airport, operating under a Red warning until 2pm,reported flight cancellations throughout the morning. However, airport officials expect flights to resume later in the afternoon, with airlines currently determining which flights will operate.
Passengers across Ireland are urged to contact their airlines directly before heading to airports to confirm flight statuses.

Turbulence Terror: Passenger Shares Her Nightmare Landing Experiance
Interview with lorraine Carney
Lorraine Carney, a Cork resident, recently faced a harrowing experience during a flight back from Gran Canaria during Storm Éowyn. We spoke with Lorraine about her ordeal, her experience with turbulence, and her thoughts on the pilot’s skill in landing the plane safely.
Archyde: Lorraine, thank you for speaking with us today. Can you describe what it was like in the cabin during the final moments of the flight?
Lorraine: It was incredibly scary. The plane was shaking so violently from side to side, and we could hear the heavy rain battering against the windows – a sound I’d never heard before.
Archyde: Did passengers react to the turbulence?
Lorraine: At first, there was a lot of nervous chatter, but then an eerie quiet fell over the cabin. Some people started praying, and at one point, there was a collective scream when the plane lurched the hardest. It was a chilling moment.
Pilot’s Skill Under Pressure
Archyde: You commended the Ryanair staff and Captain Jim Allen for their handling of the situation. What specifically stood out to you?
Lorraine: The crew kept us informed throughout, which helped ease the tension. But I have to say, the bravery and skill of Captain Allen were truly remarkable. I don’t know how he managed to land that plane; it was shaking so violently.
Archyde: Can you describe the feeling when the plane finally touched down?
Lorraine: Relief, pure relief. But even after touchdown, the plane shook so much that suitcases almost flew out of passengers’ hands. It was a truly bizarre experience, one I won’t soon forget.
Archyde: Lorraine, thank you for sharing your terrifying experience. It’s a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of flying, especially in extreme weather conditions. What advice would you give to fellow travelers facing similar situations in the future?
Lorraine: Stay calm, follow the crew’s instructions, and remember that the pilots are highly trained professionals who do their best to ensure everyone’s safety.
