Et was her debut in Austria: the singer Corina Sîrghi, celebrated in Romania, sang her way into the hearts of the audience yesterday at Schloss Spitz.
“A journey full of contrasts” is how Glatt & Verkehrt director Alberst Hosp called the music of Corina Sîrghi și Taraful Jean Americanu. The musicians played yesterday as part of the world music festival Glatt & Verkehrt and combined the smoky atmosphere of the 1930s salons in Bucharest with the hip Mahala parties of the 1990s in their atmospheric music. It was easy to imagine that this music made the blood boil under Ceaușescu’s dictatorship.
It started slowly. The four musicians, led by Shaun Williams (aka Jean Americanu), an American by choice and accordion player, struck up a yearning melody that sent goosebumps all over your body. Then Sîrghi began to sing and one wanted to cry, her singing was so touching and so full of stories.

After the concert
Corina Sîrghi offered “a journey full of contrasts” at Spitz Castle. It was her Austrian debut: the singer Corina Sîrghi, who is celebrated in Romania, sang her way into the hearts of the listeners yesterday at Schloss Spitz.
During the next few songs, the quartet fell apart a bit, which may be due to the fact that Ionel Turcitu and Costel Nechita had stepped in for violinist Marian Mirea and double bass player Cristian Mirea due to illness: the ensemble didn’t seem to be well attuned to each other and so some things were almost reminiscent of Free Jazz. However, during a breathtaking, whirlwind instrumental piece, the four reunited and following the break, Sîrghi was able to fully rely on her ensemble once more. Her smoky, beautiful voice alternated with Turcitu’s wild violin playing and Marian Řerban’s virtuosity on the cimbalom. And even if very few in the audience understood the Romanian lyrics, Sîrghi was convinced: “You understand everything”, because it’s not regarding the lyrics, it’s regarding the music and this is universal.
The “Glatt & Verkehrt” festival offers various exciting concerts in the beautiful area around Krems and the Wachau until July 30th: Smooth & Perverted
