A strong storm wreaked havoc in the south of the province of Córdoba, as well as in the departments of Río Cuarto and Calamuchita, which caused flooding, dozens of evacuees and millions in losses. According to the Meteorological Stations Network, 241 mm of rain were recorded in the area.
The intense rains registered between Tuesday and the early morning of this Wednesday, March 22, caused damage in different regions of the province, such as Villa de Merlo, Alpa Corral, Villa Quillinzo and Cañada de Sauce.
The growing caused damage in Alpa Corral, where breaks in urban furniture and in a dozen homes were reported, while in Cañada de Sauce another 15 were affected, with four families evacuated.
Meanwhile, in the town of Villa Quillinzo there was a historic flood, which caused damage to the water treatment plant. There the rise of the river was such that the water exceeded the bridge through which the town is accessed.
Villa de Merlo, where more than 200 ml of water fell in six hours, was isolated by the floods, with Route 1 cut off by the swelling of the streams and the water accumulated on the pavement and shoulders.
The municipal authorities announced a “civil and road emergency” and asked to “circulate with caution in case of extreme necessity and/or urgency to avoid possible accidents on public roads.”
“All the streets have been destroyed, the streams overflowed and we have some families evacuated.. The panorama is complex, because the roads go down from east to west and the water has flowed as if it were a river and has destroyed them,” said the local mayor, Álvarez Pinto. “The situation has exceeded us.”
Given this, the provincial government began to assist the victims through the ministries of Social Development, in addition, the Permanent Fund for Attention to Disaster Situations was activated.
Besides, The National Meteorological Service (SMN) issued an alert for the mountains of CórdobaTherefore, abundant rainfall is expected in Villa Carlos Paz during the next few hours. After “isolated storms” on Wednesday night, the SMN announces a Thursday also with “isolated storms” and “showers” in the morning.
