Córdoba inaugurated the first insect hotel: what is it for

Córdoba already has its first “insect hotel”, inside the new urban and natural promenade of the Biodiversity Park, located in Sarmiento Park. The place has numerous spaces for the preservation of different species, including insects.

The hotel, installed by BioCórdoba, is made up of “a compartmentalized artificial structure that is welcoming to the different species of insects, and provides a satisfactory space for their stay,” they explained from the municipality.

The insect hotels are divided into “rooms” that contain a variety of items: dry branches, reeds, small trees, logs with holes, pine cones or bark, materials that will benefit certain species.

And there is a wide variety of insects, including ladybugs, wild bees, bumblebees, wasps, lacewings and earwigs, that can house and reproduce in these structures while providing shelter from predators and inclement weather.

Bees, main hosts

The solitary bees and wasps, who build the cells for their offspring, are the main occupants of the hotel.

In nature, these insects look for all kinds of tiny spaces such as holes and galleries normally dug in dead wood. For this reason, these “hotels” are a way of compensating for the lack of natural holes by providing them artificially.

The compartments increase the insect biodiversity of the area and the city, especially in cities where most of the wooden elements were eliminated.

Many people reject insects, but they fulfill functions of great value by controlling the presence of pests in our gardens, orchards, and crops in a completely natural way, without having to resort to chemical products.

In addition, promoting the life of these insects facilitates the pollination of plants, helping to increase their production.

To visit: The circuit is free, and can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday with guides or freely, from 9 a.m. Entry time limit is until 5 p.m.
