INDO-Pacific Strategic Intelligence (ISI), which is under the Rupa Madani Nusantara Foundation (Rupantara), was founded as a think tank for international defense thinkers to provide appropriate policy input for the Indonesian government. The launch of ISI was held on Friday (8/3) at the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia, Jakarta.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said synergy between the government and ISI might be one of the keys to success in achieving Indonesia’s goals in the Indo-Pacific region and at the global level.

Currently, Indonesia is the first country in Southeast Asia to be accepted for ‘open for accession discussions’ with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

For this reason, close collaboration with think tanks such as ISI as knowledge partner It is hoped that this will have a positive impact on efforts to improve the quality of Indonesian policy, especially economic policy.

On the same occasion, the Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/Head of the National Land Agency, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, hopes that ISI can become a forum for civil experts for defense and foreign policy studies so that Indonesia can ensure the sustainability of defense transformation. He also supports ISI to facilitate civil-military collaboration, because not many have studied the relationship between the dynamics of the Indo-Pacific and the defense industry ecosystem.

ISI Founder and Principal Advisor Dr Muhammad Hadianto said that ISI concentrates on five study focuses, namely foreign policy and diplomacy, defense policy and strategic studies, modern warfare and military technology, defense economics, and counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency.

“It is hoped that ISI can be done leading sector in studies involving security and geostrategic issues in the Indo-Pacific. We are confident that Indonesia will become a respected force amidst changing global security dynamics. “ISI has a mission to strengthen public discourse regarding geostrategy and geopolitics in Indonesia through civil and military collaboration,” said Muhammad Hadianto.

ISI recommends three things to the Indonesian government to avoid strategic paralysis. First, the establishment of a national defense and security council function under the President to formulate strategic calculations of the various policy options that will be selected to respond to specific threats.

Second, promoting the strengthening of epistemic communities that support civil-military collaboration within a democratic framework. Third, adopt a transformative approach to foreign policy and defense modernization.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense welcomed the presence of ISI and stated that it was ready to receive policy suggestions, especially for Indonesia’s national interests which relate to geostrategic issues in the Indo-Pacific.

ISI is also expected to contribute to producing quality policies on priority issues, such as strengthening governance of defense technology acquisition and selective defense independence.
