HEAD of the Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency (BP2MI) Benny Rhamdani hopes that the National Police will uncover cases of illegal placement of citizens in Cambodia as perpetrators of online gambling or online scamming. He conveyed this after conveying the figure of T.

“Well, my hope when I conveyed the information still about the initials T was also of course my hope as the head of BP2MI and a son of the nation. Why? In my mind, because those who went to Cambodia were employed in online gambling and online scamming, the hope is that if this can be exposed, stopped, then it will automatically stop illegal placement,” said Benny at the National Police Criminal Investigation Unit, South Jakarta, Monday, July 29, 2024.

He then revealed the many children of the nation who are victims of illegal work placement in Cambodia. According to him, Indonesians in Cambodia currently reach 89,440. The number is said to be recorded according to residence permit data from Cambodian Immigration.

“Second, how many reported themselves? Out of 89,440, 17,883 reported themselves. Now, how many have been sent back to Indonesia because they worked in online gambling, online scamming? Approximately 1,914 from Cambodia,” he said.

The 1,914 who were repatriated were said to be outside of illegal placements in the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand which were also illegal placements as online gambling. He emphasized that the 1,914 victims of online gambling placement in Cambodia were the nation’s children.

“My position, focus and concern of BP2MI is the fight against illegal placement syndicates. So, if online gambling stands alone, then it is not our task and focus. That is not BP2MI’s task,” explained Benny.

Benny finished giving clarification to the Directorate of General Crimes (Dittipidum) of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Indonesian National Police regarding the figure of T, the controller of the illegal placement of Indonesian citizens to Cambodia who worked as online gambling or online scamming. Although he had reported it to the police, he was reluctant to reveal it to the public.

Benny, also did not want to convey T’s background. He ensured that he would continue to consistently mention the initials. Benny invited reporters to ask the investigators.

“What is certain, I consistently mention the initials. Whose initials are those, what is their background, so I have given information to the police investigators and please ask the investigators,” he concluded. (Z-6)
