Concert program Conversations without words designed as a journey in the world of picturesque sounds and movements, which are created and formed by the most unique and perfect instruments – the human voice and the human body.
The concert program will feature compositions by composers John Cage, Rihards Zaļupa, Jānis Ivanovs, Žibokles Martinaitīte. Similar to painting, where brushstrokes and color textures of various intensity can be observed, the music and body language of this program also contain the widest range of expressions, which the voices of the Latvian Radio Choir and the movement of Lilija Lipora turn into living works of art.
Dense layering alternates with a transparent timbre texture, resulting in transcendental scores of sound and movement. From subtle minimalism to a tense and thick soundtrack, without strict form and time lines, flowing freely and allowing yourself to be an artistic adventure.
The author of the idea of the program, Lily Lipor, reveals that this trip will be a meditation on the flow of time and our ability to live according to it.
“One of the leading impulse movements was the passage of time, swinging the hands like a swing, like a metronome, like the time in which a person is placed. How do we look at time? We try to get out of it, we try to live with it? But how do we do that if we sometimes get lost in different opinions and even in their thoughts, beliefs, streets and cities, losing such an important grounding with life,” says Lilia Lipor.
The program has a free and flowing interplay of movement and music, which is sequenced in beads of abstract vowels and syllables with clear flashes of overtones. Šaņraži and Lilia Lipor have created their scores as illusionists and wizards of textures, inviting everyone to listen and look into space and time outside of reality, allowing themselves to dreams and the flight of essence.

Yes, folks, no need for a thesaurus or an overly articulate ex—partner to understand any of it; just bring your ears and a belief that dance is more than just what happens after two glasses of wine!
This mesmerizing orchestration features compositions from renowned composers, including the audacious John Cage (who’s basically the Picasso of music—if Picasso played the kazoo), and the talented Rihards Zaļupa, Jānis Ivanovs, and Žibokles Martinaitīte. Just imagine it: a symphony orchestrated by the Latvian Radio Choir, combining heavenly voices with the entrancing choreography of Lilija Lipora, creating a living tableau of artistic delight. Quite a mouthful, hmm? Like trying to chew a whole grapefruit in one bite. But don’t worry; it’s juicy and refreshing!
The program promises a breathtaking melange of layered sounds, flowing through the presence of the human body in motion—it’s music that makes you want to mingle with minimalism while embracing the tension of a thick soundtrack. Sort of like cooking an omelette but without worrying about whether the pan is non-stick. Let’s be honest, who has time for such details when you’re deep in the transcendental?
About the brain behind this auditory escapade, Lilia Lipor herself. She describes this experience as a meditation on the flow of time. Oh, time! The ultimate paradox. It slips through our fingers faster than a politician altering their stance. She muses, “How do we look at time?”—implying there’s a spectrum to it. We can either fight against its relentless march or do a delightful cha-cha with it. The audacity!
Throughout this artistic tour de force, prepare for a free-flowing interplay of sound and movement. Expect beads of abstract vowels and the odd flash of overtones that might make you feel as if you’ve eaten mushrooms of the musical variety—without the side effect of questioning your own existence. Lipor and Šaņraži don’t just create music; they weave a phantasmagoria with a sprinkle of illusion. I mean, if that’s not enough to perk up your senses, what is? How about glittering confetti?
This program is the grand premiere for this year’s Riga A Cappella festival, occurring from November 6 to 9. Yes, that’s right! I mean, who wouldn’t want to see that level of artistry live? It’s like witnessing a one-man show of a cat’s life—if only cats could sing.
Lilia Lipor, the mastermind of this whole whimsical endeavor, is a contemporary dance magician herself. She elegantly fuses artistic genres without breaking a sweat, conjuring expressive movement stories that’ll make you wish you had taken more dance classes in school instead of merely shaking awkwardly at parties.
