In the summer of 2003, Yu Shuang was born in an ordinary rural family in Daba Mountain. He was the youngest and received the greatest care from the whole family. But when he was 3 years old, his parents found that the child kept falling while walking, and it was only following he went to the hospital that he found out that it was a congenital visual impairment. Since he was a child, his parents took Yu Shuang to seek medical treatment everywhere, which brought a lot of financial burden to the family that was not rich.
“We still won’t give up.” Yu Shuang’s father said.
Although there are certain physical defects, the family still gave Yu Shuang all the love. In addition, Yu Shuang had a cheerful and optimistic personality since he was a child. He was naturally active and did not feel that he was much different from others.
In 2016, Yu Shuang, who was less than 13 years old, began to contact track and field sports. Unexpectedly, following just a few months, he won three silver medals in the city’s disabled sports meeting, showing his extraordinary athletic talent.
“I like sports, love sports, and I am willing to sway every sweat on the court.” He said it and did it.
In order to prepare for the “2022 Beijing Winter Paralympics”, in the winter of 2018, Yu Shuang, who was only 15 years old, was spotted by the Beijing Disabled Persons’ Federation.
“I thought I was joking when I said that I was going to Beijing.” Yu Shuang’s birthplace, Dazhou City, Sichuan Province, has a subtropical monsoon climate, with an annual average temperature of regarding 17°C and an average temperature of 6.6°C in January. It is a county town with almost no snow. , I have never been exposed to ice and snow sports before going to Beijing.
“I want to try.” Yu Shuang made his own decision.
From the hometown of Qu County to the capital Beijing, the distance of more than 3,000 miles, Yu Shuang embarked on the journey.
After arriving at the training ground, Yu Shuang was instantly attracted by the environment here. “It’s so exciting!” Yu Shuang recalled that the first time he came to the snow field, he still remembers that feeling to this day. But the excitement and excitement are short-lived. When a 15-year-old boy from the south with a vision impairment came to the north to train and live alone, his difficulty might be imagined.
Unsuitable weather, unaccustomed diet, boring training, homesickness… 15-year-old Yu Shuang needs to overcome one difficulty following another, but fortunately he never thought of giving up. In the face of many tests, he did not back down, gritted his teeth and completed the training tasks assigned by the coach earnestly and actively, and never missed any training sessions in the cold winter and hot summer.
“I am an athlete, I want to participate in the Paralympic Games, and I must win honor for my motherland.” Falling down once more and once more, getting up once more and once more. With the passage of time, Yu Shuang’s talent in sports has been revealed, and with the help of the coach, his performance has improved by leaps and bounds. Soon, in 2019, Yu Shuang entered the national training team and became a real “national brand” player. In the same year, Yu Shuang won the first national championship of his sports career, and later won the championship in the intercontinental competition.
On March 5, 2022, Yu Shuang stood on the Paralympic arena for the first time. In the men’s biathlon short distance (visually impaired) competition that day, Yu Shuang started the 8th under the guidance of guide Wang Guanyu. In the end, Yu Shuang won the fourth place. “I played my strength today. I scored a lot of goals, but I also have some small regrets. I was a little short of the medal, but I am not discouraged. I believe that today is just the beginning, and I will work harder in the following games.” After the game, In an interview with the media, Yu Shuang was not very discouraged, but he was still full of confidence in the next game.
