Convergence, an effective summary of your playing time

Before starting this review, I must mention that I am an amateur of all things related to League of Legends; I played it regarding every day for seven years, tried all the derivative games (Legends of Runeterra, Ruined King, Hextech Mayhem, Stomach Seeker), loved the animated series Arcane on Netflix… in short, I am not entirely impartial to this universe rich in stories.

In the case of Convergencewe follow Ekko on a fast-paced adventure filled with action and platforming sequences, similar to the series Metroid or Castlevania (hence the birth of the term metroidvania). In addition to having to retrace his steps and use his skills to find other paths, Ekko is able to go back in time by a few seconds, and the mechanics are the central point of this game, a bit like in the excellent Prince of Persia series. At the slightest mistake, you can go back, provided you have the necessary energy to do so. And errors, there will be many.

The game isn’t too difficult overall, but the enemies are definitely not inanimate statues. Lots of variations on the same few enemies in the game, added to the fast-paced adventure, forces us to find more efficient ways to fight, and make use of all of Ekko’s powers. The controls are precise, and mistakes rarely seem unfair. Small negative point to note, towards the end of the adventure, the quality of the opponents increases, but also their quantity, which becomes a difficulty that seems unfair, since the screen is sometimes filled with so many different elements that we loses sight of our own character.

Fortunately, the game’s chapters follow each other quickly, and although I was disappointed to see the credits following only eight hours – given the price – I enjoyed everything that was presented. The story, which does not revolutionize the theme of time travel, still brings some touching moments, all presented in a colorful and very pleasant comic book style.

Any lover of League of Legends will wonder if we will have the chance to see other characters from this universe, and the answer is yes. In addition to instrumental versions of familiar themes from certain characters (I don’t want to break any surprises here, but it’s a treat every time), Ekko will team up with some unexpected but well-known allies, and have to face off once morest a few more. Others are only mentioned, but that’s enough to delight everyone without alienating neophytes.

The game contains several items to collect, which will grant components to improve our arsenal, or unlock a variety of color variants for Ekko, enough to keep the downloadable content very optional. Some are hidden behind fast-paced sequences, which call upon all of the player’s agility, while others only require a slight deviation from the obvious path.

Ekko can unlock combat techniques, create upgrades to use (a limited number of them can be accessed at a time, but this series is changeable at any time, and defeating an end-of-level villain increases the number improvements available simultaneously), find lost notes that will provide additional context; it’s all pretty much always in its way, so you never lose focus on the main quest.

Again, the content unlocks and the story evolves at a fairly rapid pace, and the ten hours that would be needed to fully unlock everything sometimes seems like little. At the same time, I wondered what more the game might have offered, and I mightn’t find an answer.

Convergence : A League of Legends Story is therefore an efficient, fast and pleasant compendium of everything that an adventure game lover or a fan of League of Legends might desire. To try, but maybe when the price drops?
