Payment by credit card on board has been possible since 2017, thanks to a pilot project launched by the Regional Metropolitan Transport Authority (ARTM).
In 2022, some 337,000 trips were paid for by credit card on STL buses, a sign of the initiative’s popularity.
Met by TVA Nouvelles at the Montmorency terminus, customers are delighted to see the Société de transport de Laval (STL) develop new payment methods.
“It is sure that it is more practical. Me personally, I have an OPUS card, so I don’t use time, but I know that there are a lot of people who find it much more practical, so that’s good news,” says a woman.
“It’s great, because sometimes we don’t have any money, and we can’t take the bus,” explains another user.
While Laval residents are fortunate to have this technology available, public transit users in Montreal are impatiently awaiting the arrival of on-board payment by credit card.
The ARTM plans to expand its pilot project starting in 2025 for buses from the Société de transport de Montréal, but also those from the RTL and exo.
“There is a project in place with the four operators which has started. Obviously, the objective is really to ensure that we will have a renewed experience for the user, so we must update 7000 validation points. We need to update the central system. We really want there to be fluidity for the person who takes the train, bus or metro at the same time,” explains Sylvain Perras, executive director of information technology at the ARTM.
