The foreign minister is in the hot seat for granting visas to a delegation of fourteen Iranians, including the ultra-conservative mayor of Tehran, as part of the Urban Summit 2023 held in Brussels last week.

The PS and Ecolo “need more answers”: the motion calling for the resignation of Hadja Lahbib should not be voted on today

Greens and Socialists remain unsatisfied

Ms. Lahbib explained herself at length on Tuesday during a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on External Relations. But it is clear that the ecologists, as well as the socialists (PS and Vooruit), however majority partners of the MR, remain unsatisfied.

There was no acknowledgment of error, no apologies, no guarantees that this stuff won’t happen once more.

“There are still serious problems”, continues Samuel Cogolati. Basically, he says, there is this inconsistency regarding the dates – this “lie”, according to the N-VA. In the Chamber last week, Minister Lahbib said that she had granted the visas on June 8 following consulting Ocam (the Body for Threat Analysis), but the opinion of the latter was not handed over until June 9. MP Écolo also wonders why 14 visas were granted when only four people had been invited to the Summit in Brussels.

“And on form,” Mr. Cogolati said, “there was no acknowledgment of error, no apology, no guarantee that this stuff won’t happen once more.”

“It’s not enough, he decides. As things stand, we cannot vote for a motion of confidence. Clearly, the minister must return to parliament to explain herself. The work is not finished.”
