Controversy Surrounding President Gustavo Petro’s Receptions at Public Events

The president, Gustavo Petro, reacted to the video in which they announced his intervention at the opening of the National Infrastructure Congress, held in Cartagena, which was received with little applause from the public. The president thinks otherwise, saying that he must “have bad hearing.”

Through his X account, the head of state claimed to have heard applause at the beginning, at the intermission and at the end of his speech at the opening of the union event.

“I must have bad hearing. I heard applause at the beginning, in the middle and at the end,” Petro wrote on her social networks.

A solitary applause was heard at the Julio César Turbay Ayala Convention Center, where the event is taking place. No one else joined the president’s reception.

Did they do it once more? They denounce on networks that the Government’s public channel once once more gave false applause to Petro’s reception at a conference with businessmen

The national government, headed by the President of the Republic, Gustavo Petro Urrego, was involved in a new controversy in his presentation of the XX National Infrastructure Congress (CCI).

When the head of state took the stage to give his speech, he was supposedly greeted with a large amount of applause, if you look at the official Government broadcast.

However, videos outside his administration’s communications team are circulating on social networks, showing that the president received not so much applause but rather a stony silence.

This would not be new. Last Tuesday, September 19, during Petro’s speech in New York, before the United Nations General Assembly, the lack of attention paid to him by his counterparts and delegates went viral on social media.

Petro’s words came following a five-minute break, provided by the organizers of the event, following the intervention of the president of the United States, Joe Biden. When the time was up, the delegates and leaders spoke among themselves, while very few were in their seats.

Later, Dennis Francis, president of the General Assembly, said: “The meeting resumes,” without receiving a response. Seeing that he was not getting the attention of the room, he banged the gavel to get the audience’s attention.

“Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen. The meeting resumes. The assembly will hear a speech by His Excellency Gustavo Petro Urrego, President of the Republic of Colombia. I ask protocol to escort his excellence,” Francis said.

A few seconds later, the Colombian president walked towards the lectern from which he was going to deliver his speech, but the audience was still dispersed.

Given this, Petro assured: “You will say…”, to the board of directors, where António Guterres, secretary general of the United Nations, was also present. After almost five minutes without having the attention of the assembly, and still with a lot of noise, the Colombian president addressed the public.

On the same Tuesday, through X, formerly Twitter, a video was made public in which the idea was postulated that, apparently, the clip of Gustavo Petro’s participation in the UN had been manipulated.

“See this. The Petro Government, apparently, manipulated the recording of his painful speech in front of the UN, through the institutional channel. Watch both videos. The first is the original. The second adds a fragment to pretend that many attendees heard his speech,” wrote an Internet user on the aforementioned social network.
