The Trentino governor, Maurizio Fugatti, issued an order to kill a problem bear on Friday. Fugatti’s instruction sparked protests from animal protection groups. The animal with the identification code F36 attacked two young hunters in the town of Mandrel on July 30th.

The two hunters were surprised and chased by the bear near Roncone. One of the two fled up a tree and was caught by one of the bear’s paws. He fell to the ground and the bear fled.

In July, an administrative court in Trent stopped Fugatti’s regulation to kill the “problem bears” JJ4 and MJ5. According to the judges, the measure was “incompatible” with supranational and national regulations on bear protection. Such an intervention on a protected species can only be approved if there is no other solution.

The bear JJ4 killed a 26-year-old jogger in the Trentino forests in April. MJ5 had injured two men. The two bears are in an animal protection center in Casteller near Trento. According to the province, the number of bears in the area has increased massively since the EU project “Life Ursus”. Instead of 50 as planned, around 100 wild animals have settled.
