Controversy Surrounding New District Development in Mont: Implications for the Village and Inhabitants

2023-09-10 19:00:00

The construction of a new district in the locality of Mont naturally does not please all the inhabitants of the village. This concerns 77 single-family houses and 21 apartments, on an area of seven hectares located parallel to rue du Fraichaux. We developed the project in our August 23 edition.

The leader of the opposition in the municipal council, Bertrand Custinne, is certainly aware that the granting of the permit falls to the majority in place, La Relève and LB. But this will have repercussions beyond this legislature alone.

In a press release, the advisor highlights the advantages of an increase in the supply of housing. Such a project, he adds, must however respect the built environment and the existing population.

Remember that this is building land defined in the Sector Plan and whose urbanization has been the subject of a Local Orientation Plan (SOL) since 1979.

The representatives of the EPY group, both the municipal council and the CPAS affirm that their intention is not to block any urban planning project “because we don’t change the rules 40 years later, but what is on the table is too ambitious and is not respectful of the rest of the village.”

For them, the project must be improved, in particular on the drainage which they consider insufficient, the preservation of more green spaces, the number of parking spaces and a reduction in the number of homes to get closer to the number retained in the SOL of 1979, namely 7.4 dwellings per hectare.

Good integration

It is important, the press release continues, that the authorities think regarding possible actions to integrate these future new inhabitants in terms of mobility and village life, such as the construction of new classes somewhere in the village, while classes are still in modules announced as provisional but which have been there for 15-20 years.

In terms of mobility, the group which evaluates the increase from 150 to 200 vehicles, considers that the state of the roads is not suitable for such a transport and that it is important that there be consultation with the neighboring commune of Assesse. He hopes that the authorities will reassure the population on these essential points, before any approval of any developer request. A committee of neighborhood residents was formed. Some came, during the last meeting of the municipal council, to show their opposition.

Citizens have until September 15 to consult the file with the municipal administration and express their opinions and remarks. We therefore understand that the municipal college has not yet been able to take a position.
