“Controversy Surrounding King Charles’ Allegiance Ceremony: Latest Updates and News Coverage”

Following heavy criticism over the Church of England’s call to publicly swear allegiance to King Charles, the controversial passage from the ceremony has been slightly edited. Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby will now “invite” residents to show their support for the monarch, while it was initially a “call” to swear allegiance to the new King.

According to British media, Charles accepted this change. But his friend and official biographer Jonathan Dimbleby told Britain’s PA news agency that the King would have found the tribute “unpleasant”.

Prince Andrew controversy

The office of the Archbishop of Canterbury, which will officiate at the ceremony, announced last week that the usual oath of allegiance, reserved for British nobility, would be scrapped. It would be replaced by a “tribute of the people”. The Anglican Church hoped the adjustment would lead to “a great outcry across the nation and around the world in support of the King”. Across the UK and the Commonwealth, citizens would be called upon to say: “I swear true allegiance to Your Majesty, your heirs and your successors, according to law. God help me”.

The anti-monarchy organization Republic criticized the Anglican Church’s appeal, in part because it would also mean taking an oath of allegiance to Prince Andrew, eighth in line to the British throne, who fell out of favor due to of his involvement in an abuse scandal. Several others also criticized the line-up.
