Controversy Surrounding Development Project: Uncovering the Truth and Delirious Coincidences

First element put forward by René Smeets: contrary to what Giuseppe Pignataro, owner of the land on which the project is planned, said, he did not try to invalidate the public inquiry held in May. “I simply asked by registered letter during the investigation that it be started once more. I maintain this request, he says. The official notices clearly stated that the entire file might be downloaded from the City’s website. s.”

Coincidence and delirium

On May 23, Mayor Maxime Prévot, the police, Giuseppe Pignataro and a few residents met on rue de la Liberation to discuss future developments relating to mobility and security. “This meeting had been promised 20 months earlier following concerns regarding traffic and parking conditions. We therefore had to wait, but it took place barely an hour following the closing of the public inquiry. What a coincidence!”, observes René Smeets with irony. According to the mayor, it did not take place earlier simply for a matter of the agenda. “Well prepared, the meeting went well, but, by the mayeur’s own admission, its effects will only be felt in regarding 18 months,” adds the obstinate resident.

That day, René Smeets attests to having been bothered by Giuseppe Pignataro. “I got the mayor to immediately reopen the small path leading from the Night & Day bus stop to the Allée des Fleurs district. This precious shortcut had been blocked off with a wire following the laying of electric cables, he says. of his campaign of intimidation!” Far from fearing this complaint, René Smeets even says he is delighted that the case ends up in the criminal court so that he can recount there at length the “methods” of Giuseppe Pignataro which he shamelessly describes as “mafia”.

The Region will decide

In addition, René Smeets points out that the Trade Observatory has repeatedly issued an unfavorable opinion for the Intermarché and Aveve projects. The Walloon advisory body considers that several criteria are not respected, such as the protection of the urban environment and mobility.

The Observatory is convinced that shoppers will travel to the site mainly by car and that the stores will mainly benefit motorized passing customers, which does not correspond to sustainable mobility. Given the increase in traffic induced by the project, the organization also expresses fears regarding the accident-prone nature of a commercial development at this location.

The City has given a favorable opinion. The alderwoman in charge of town planning, Stéphanie Scailquin, specifies that the Region is the competent authority to issue (or not) the integrated permit requested by NEO SPRL (company of Giuseppe Pignataro). The decision of the delegated official of the Walloon Region is expected in a few days. If the permit is granted, work might (finally) begin in the fall. But until then, other twists cannot be ruled out in this decidedly very thorny issue.
