Iron’s fate is not yet sealed. This Friday, we learned that the mayor of La Louvière, Jacques Gobert, had decided to execute an order to return the dog, likely to have participated in the attack which had cost the life of little Talya, 8 years old at the time of the events, to his owner in order to have him euthanized. The La Louvière SPA and several volunteers had opposed this decision, refusing to hand over the dog to the police who had come to the shelter.
This Sunday, Jacques Gobert announces that another outcome might be possible, under strict conditions. The latter published, on his social networks, the communication established by Me Gelay, lawyer for Talya’s mother following a meeting. The latter recalls the facts and insists on the fact that the mother “lives every day with an indescribable feeling of sadness and guilt for having left her alone with her dogs when she had gone for a few moments to a neighbor to ask for his aid.”
Avoid another tragedy
One of the aggressive dogs had been shot by the police. The second, Iron, had been seized. “The Mons Court of Appeal adds to the prison sentence pronounced once morest my client the obligation, if the dog is returned to her, to have it euthanized, specifying that “this is an appropriate condition given the dangerousness of the dog concerned who attacked and killed an eight-year-old girl whom he knew well and whose mistress had not detected any particular aggression towards her until then.
And to continue: “to this extent, my client, in memory of Talya, opposed and still morally opposes Iron being put up for adoption and having any contact with a child. On the other hand, she harbors no feeling of revenge towards the animal assuming the responsibility for the drama. Its only objective is to prevent another tragedy from happening.”
Talya’s mother is now willing to waive the euthanasia of the dog entrusted to the SPA “provided that the latter makes the formal and non-negotiable commitment, formalized in an agreement, that Iron will remain, until the end of his life, under his sole responsibility, will never be put up for adoption and will never be in contact with a child.” An alternative on which Jacques Gobert has agreed.
The latter clarified that “his decision to return the dog to his owner was motivated by the desire not to take the risk that he be put up for adoption because the veterinarians consulted (including the one mandated by the SPA) recommend a adoption in a family where he will be the only dog and a family without children under 12 with regular monitoring, proof that the risk of accident is always present. Even if these conditions were met, no guarantee can be given that a future transfer of the dog would circumvent these impositions.
If the agreement were to be ratified, the SPA would undertake to respect the conditions imposed. The proposal will be formally submitted to the latter on Monday.
