The Ministry of Transport in Egypt announced, on Monday, that it had referred 3 people for investigation, following pictures of them were spread while they were eating food above the electronic traffic gates of the main Cairo train station.
The image, which shows 3 employees eating at the gates, sparked controversy on social media platforms, regarding the way to deal with these newly installed electronic gates to regulate the entry and exit of passengers.
The ministry said in a statement: “As soon as the picture circulated regarding some workers at the Ramses railway station eating food at one of the electronic traffic gates inside the station hall, the railway authority referred them for investigation to find out the reasons for this behavior.”
And the ministry continued: “These workers work in shifts (from 6 to 8 hours per day), and a time is allocated for them to rest in the middle of the shift to eat various meals and perform prayers.”
And she stressed that “employees are not allowed to eat during work periods, whether inside the offices or at the entrance and exit gates at the various stations.”
The ministry’s statement added: “All workers at railway stations can eat meals during their rest period in cafeterias spread across all railway stations across the republic, and the Ministry of Transport has been keen to support all its affiliated bodies and companies with cafeterias that provide distinct levels of service to all employees of the ministry, including For example, the cafeteria inside the Ministry of Transport building in the government district in the New Administrative Capital.
The statement stressed: “The Ministry of Transport does not hesitate to take all necessary and deterrent legal measures once morest each defaulter, in accordance with the principle of reward and punishment to maintain the functioning and discipline of the work system, within the plan to modernize and develop the railway system.”
The Ministry of Transport confirmed that “this incident is an individual one,” and that “all employees of the Egyptian National Railways and all companies and agencies affiliated with the Ministry are making every effort to provide the highest levels of service to the public.”
