Controversy Over Convictional Signs: Anderlecht’s Neutrality Debate

Tuesday, November 28, the municipality of Anderlecht voted for a motion authorizing the wearing of religious symbols in the administration, except in the context of functions of authority and contact with the public. This motion was quickly criticized by many politicians. “It is a new decline in liberal democracy that we must see,” declared Georges-Louis Bouchez at the time.

This Monday morning, it was François De Smet, president of DéFI, who protested once morest the Anderlecht motion. “It’s a disastrous signal, a serious precedent,” he declared on the set of BX1. The MP points the finger at the role of Ecolo, who tabled the initial motion, and believes that the party has “gone out of line”: “It’s a fairly unbearable coup.”

For the president of DéFI, Ecolo is home to a “communitarian project”. “Today, Ecolo is the relay of political Islam. And that’s a real problem,” he laments. This is a “new drift” since, according to François De Smet, “just a few years ago, Ecolo did the opposite in municipalities like Uccle and Auderghem with pro-neutrality motions”. “There is clearly a bet, perhaps electoral,” believes the MP.

The president of DéFI therefore indicates that his party “will not participate in a project which will undermine neutrality”. “As long as we are in the majority in Anderlecht, we will fight the revision of these regulations,” declares François De Smet.
