Recently, a unit in Shenzhen, China held a mobile phone astronomy photography competition. After the winners list was released, some netizens discovered that the first prize was their own photo, but the winners did not know each other at all. After contacting the organizer, the organizer also refused to provide the winner’s information to netizens, and even kept looking for reasons to delay it. The angry netizens exposed all this process online. At present, the organizer also stated that the winners are currently voluntarily withdrawing from the competition, and it is not clear whether they will compensate the original filming netizens.
According to Chinese media reports, the official website of Shenzhen Tourism recently held the “Shenzhen Mobile Astronomy Photography Contest”, calling on the public to use their mobile phones to take pictures of Shenzhen’s astronomical scenes. The winners of the whole competition were confirmed on the 18th, and one of them, “Lin Meigong”, won the first prize with a photo of a domed building and a starry sky.
Unexpectedly, following the award-winning works were exposed, a netizen surnamed Hu was not happy, because when he saw the winning works, he knew that they were photos he had taken in the past, and the photos themselves were taken with a digital monocular, not simply cell phone. In addition, netizens surnamed Hu also discovered that Lin Meigong not only stole her own pictures to participate in the photography competition, but even edited out her own figure in the photos. This series of exaggerated behaviors also made netizens surnamed Hu question “doesn’t the official photo contest look at the EXIF file of the camera?”
Afterwards, a netizen surnamed Hu contacted the official photo contest, asking the organizer to explain and provide information regarding the winners. But the organizers just kept jumping the needle on the point of “this is a public welfare competition, not for commercial use”. Not only did they refuse to provide information regarding the winners, they even refused to continue communicating with netizens with the surname Hu and forcibly closed the conversation. These behaviors made the netizens surnamed Hu mad, so they exposed all the content on the Internet.
After the whole incident was exposed on the Internet, it caused an uproar, and many netizens criticized the organizer’s negligence in management. On the followingnoon of the 21st, the organizer finally issued another announcement, stating that “the organizing committee has received objections to individual award-winning works. The organizing committee will feed back the objections to the first prize of the original natural unit to the contributors, and the contributors express their voluntary participation.” Withdrew from the competition and waived the relevant award rights. Accordingly, the organizing committee revoked the honors and awards awarded to this work. The organizing committee thanks all netizens for their attention and supervision of the competition, and deeply regrets the controversy that occurred during the competition.”
Although the winner voluntarily withdrew from the competition, the final result was also blank. However, the netizen surnamed Hu whose pictures were stolen not only did not receive any compensation or apology, nor did he even express any indication of how to deal with it in the future. Afterwards, some media also tried to contact the organizer, but the staff of the organizer did not answer the phone.
