A French car manufacturer’s advertisement ignited a firestorm in Cairo after critics claimed it normalized sexual harassment, a pervasive problem in the nation.

The commercial, showcased last month by Citroën‘s Egyptian branch, features renowned Egyptian vocalist and actor Amr Diab behind the wheel of their new C4 SUV. The vehicle abruptly halts before a pedestrian woman.

Diab’s gaze falls upon the woman; he captures her likeness using the car’s in-built rearview mirror camera. A smile graces his face as the photo appears on his phone. Subsequently, a scene depicts them together, seemingly on a date.

While the advertisement’s goal was ostensibly to highlight the vehicle’s camera feature, the sixty-year-old singer and the car company faced significant backlash.

Following intense online criticism, Citroën’s Egyptian subsidiary issued a public apology and promptly removed the one-hundred-second spot from all their platforms.

Their statement expressed deep regret for the ad’s misinterpretation and confirmed its removal. They extended a sincere apology to all offended parties.

Diab, who maintained the video on his social media platforms, boasting tens of millions of followers, remained silent on the matter.
