Controversy Continues: The Penalty-Gate Between Genk and Anderlecht

Many Genk supporters still had hope but, unfortunately for them, their hopes were in vain. Despite the “penalty-gate” which marred the match, the match between Genk et Anderlecht from the end of December will not be replayed. The Belgian Football Union officially announced it this Monday followingnoon. Note that the Limburg club still has the opportunity to challenge this decision before the CAS (court of arbitration for sport).

As a reminder, just before the holidays, a scene caused a lot of ink to flow during the match, at Saint-Guidon, between Anderlecht and Genk. The Limburgers first obtained a penalty, which was missed by Bryan Heynen. And yes Yira Sor had scored on the rebound, the Limburg goal was ultimately invalidated.

So why was this goal ultimately canceled? Because the referee (and the VAR) judged that Sor had entered the penalty area too early. Except that in view of the slow motion, Anderlecht players had also entered the area too early.

What followed was a huge imbroglio during which the refereeing quartet present and the VAR floundered for many minutes. And while there was initially talk of withdrawing the penalty, the ball was finally returned… to Anderlecht. A decision which had obviously aroused the ire of the Genkois, who therefore decided to lodge a complaint… without success.

So, what does the refereeing department say in its defense released today? Well, no game application error was made and there is therefore no need to replay the match: “Taking into account all the elements provided by both parties and the answers given by the witnesses, the Referees Department considers that no error was made in the application of the rules of the game. In this case, it is of an error of assessment regarding the said phase.”

And who says error of judgment, says human error and therefore no reason to replay the match.
