Controversy at Turkish Super Cup Final: Fenerbahce Walks Out, Galatasaray Celebrates

Fenerbahce fielded their U19s in the Turkish Super Cup final on Sunday only to leave the field following barely 50 seconds of play. Time to let Mauro Icardi open the scoring for Galatasaray.

The Fenerbahce players then left the pitch, leaving Galatasaray, with Dries Mertens among them, to celebrate the acquisition of a 17th Cup on the green carpet. A result which will have to be made official by the authorities, but which is beyond doubt.

The leaders of Fenerbahce had warned of the scenario implemented on Sunday evening. Michy Batshuayi’s club had requested the postponement of the match due to the quarter-final of the Conference League which it must play on Thursday once morest Olympiacos. The ‘Fener’ also demanded that a foreign referee direct the match, arguing that Turkish referees had unfavorably treated him.

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF), which on Wednesday sentenced two Fenerbahce players to a one-match suspension following violence during a pitch invasion at Trabzonspor following a championship match, rejected both requests.

The Turkish Super Cup was initially scheduled for December 29 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, but the meeting was postponed at the last minute following Saudi organizers refused to allow players to wear jerseys with political slogans. The two teams wanted to warm up with jerseys bearing the image of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey, to celebrate the centenary of the Turkish Republic.

The proceeds from the meeting will be donated to the victims of the earthquake of February 6, 2023 which left more than 53,500 dead in Turkey.
