Controversies and Suspicions: Tour de France, Doping, and Alcohol – The Inside Story

A few days following the suspicions of doping, it was alcohol that was invited into the controversies linked to the Tour de France. Richard Plugge, manager of Jumbo-Visma, was interviewed by the daily L’Équipe regarding suspicions of Jonas Vingegaard.

The strong man of the best team on the Grande Boucle had also targeted, without citing it, the Groupama-FDJ team of Marc Madiot whom he accused of having consumed alcohol the day before the time trial. “For example, we were with a French team at our hotel during the rest day. We saw runners drinking large beers. Alcohol is poison” explained Richard Plugge.

To attack Groupama-FDJ is to attack the baby of Marc Madiot, an unfiltered boss who does not hesitate to say out loud what he thinks. And to respond to the words of Richard Plugge, Madiot was not a dead hand in form. “Let him shut his mouth. Keep his mouth shut! On the rest day there is traditionally a pot with the frame. The staff drank beers. But only the Perrier runners” he justified, with rage in his eyes.

Richard Plugge’s statements went very badly within the peloton and the various team staffs present on the Tour. In an attempt to calm the heat, the manager of the Jumbo-Visma decided to respond ironically on Twitter following the final stage of the Tour in Paris. The latter has indeed published a photo of 4 large bottles of beer, served during the stage to the riders of the Jumbo to celebrate the final victory of Jonas Vingegaard.

Except that, and this is where the answer is subtle, the beer served to the runners is actually Heineken 0.0%! Four large beers for the Jumbo, but… without alcohol.

For his part, the Marc Madiot show also continued on the Champs-Élysées where he was seen with a sign on which it was written “A small beer for the Jumbo” near a vehicle… of the Jumbo.
