A sumptuous “wedding” of dogs organized in Indonesia by their owners has caused controversy in this Asian country where the distribution of wealth is one of the most unequal in the world. “We very much regret this and would like to apologize to everyone who loves traditional Javanese culture and to all Indonesians who felt uncomfortable and hurt,” said the dog’s owner, Indira Ratnasari, who , according to local media, works for the presidency.
Press conference to apologize
The “wedding” of two Alaskan Malamutes wearing traditional Javanese clothes was organized at the end of last week in a shopping center in the capital Jakarta, with their owners and relatives. The ceremony would have cost 200 million rupees (13,500 US dollars). The minimum wage in Jakarta is 4.9 million rupees ($327). A tenth of the 270 million Indonesians live below the poverty line, according to the World Bank.
The images of the two dogs giving each other a paw to seal their union quickly sparked an outcry on social networks, forcing the owners to organize a press conference to apologize. “It’s a waste of money and a challenge to God. Common sense has disappeared and been trampled on by the desire to show off one’s riches,” one person tweeted. The owners, two women, “should have helped people in need,” said another.
In March, Indonesian President Joko Widodo called on officials not to flaunt their lives “inappropriately” by posting messages on social media.
