Lhe presence in Brussels of the mayor of Tehran, Alireza Zakani, is causing controversy. Invited for the Brussels Urban Summit by the international organization Metropolis, which brings together cities with more than one million inhabitants, his arrival raises questions following the arbitrary detention of Olivier Vandecasteele for 455 days by the ayatollahs’ regime. For the 2023 edition, Brussels is the host city of this world congress which welcomes 2,000 representatives from 600 cities for three days. Mr. Zakani was received Monday evening at Brussels City Hall, because he exercises the co-presidency of Metropolis with his counterparts in Berlin and Guangzhou.
