After a nasty foul on Dan Ndoye, a pack formed during the Nati game on Tuesday evening.

In the end, a total of three Nati players were warned.

Coach and players agree: That was a clear red card.

For a brief moment, Murat Yakin seemed to no longer understand the world. The Nati coach looked completely astonished in the 70th minute European Championship qualifying game once morest Andorra (3:0) towards referee Elchin Masiyev. Seconds earlier, the Azerbaijani referee had only shown yellow for a brutal tackle by Andorra’s Éric Vales on Dan Ndoye.

“It’s completely incomprehensible to me that this isn’t a red card,” Yakin said angrily following the game. Immediately following the scene, the national team coach asked the fourth official, somewhat offensively, regarding a possible intervention by the video referee – and ultimately saw the yellow card himself. “We were very decent,” confirmed Yakin. “It’s very hard just because you leave the coaching zone by regarding a meter.”

Yellow for Yakin and substitute Sommer

But Yakin was not the only Nati player who was sanctioned with a warning for his reaction to the serious foul once morest Ndoye. Substitute goalie Yann Sommer was also punished for the same offense as Yakin. Manuel Akanji, a third Swiss on the field, saw yellow within a few seconds. The defender retaliated once morest perpetrator Vales with a push and even triggered a pack formation.

«It was regarding protecting our player. The referee should be responsible for that,” explained Akanji following the end of the game when asked regarding 20 minutes later. “The opponent has zero chance of getting the ball. For me it’s a clear red card.” The ManCity player received approval from SRF commentator Sascha Ruefer. “This is an attack like no other,” he said during the TV broadcast.

Referee has to take back yellow

However, the foul once morest Ndoye was not the only action in which referee Masiyev was extremely unfortunate. In stoppage time, following a duel in the Andorran penalty area, to the dismay of the Swiss fans and players, he also drew a yellow card once morest Dan Ndoye for an alleged swallow.

At least the VAR intervened in this case. After a brief review of the TV images, the referee had no choice but to decide on a penalty for Switzerland – and to withdraw the previously completely over-motivated warning once morest Ndoye. Xherdan Shaqiri finally scored the penalty to make it 3-0.
