The nationalist deputy had requested and obtained in 2015 a permit from the municipality of Koksijde to renovate an old villa even if the latter was included in the municipal inventory as “remarkable heritage”. The Nature and Forest department had however attached its green light to a series of conditions such as the prohibition to add permanent constructions.

But a few years later, the politician leveled part of the land and planted dunes to create a lawn before adding a garden pavilion. A local resident recently lodged a complaint and the police contacted the elected official to verify the existence of a possible town planning offence. The environmental inspectorate will soon take up the case.
Sander Loones for his part pleads good faith and points the finger at the municipality. “We renovated our house several years ago with a permit in good and due form and in accordance with all the information we had received from the competent services at the time”, he underlines in the newspaper. “Of course, we will do everything we can to comply with the regulations. I have thus taken the necessary steps to follow the procedure as soon as the complaint has been filed,” adds the person concerned.
On X, formerly Twitter, the N-VA MP disputes that his garden is on a nature reserve and adds that a lawn has existed there for decades. His “garden pavilion” is, according to the person concerned, a greenhouse of 2 meters by 3 meters and the garden is not concreted either, he writes. “There is no question of condemnation either. No administrative procedure has yet been initiated. And there is not even a file yet”, continues Sander Loones, who also attacks De Standaard, who devoted “a full page to the information with a very large photo.”
