Controversial Poster Campaign in Aalst: Exploring the Issue of Illegal Dumping

The city of Aalst is in an embarrassing situation. Indeed, for a few days, a poster campaign has been launched to try to sensitize the population to fight once morest illegal dumping, all to make the public space cleaner. But for this campaign, the visual chosen is controversial.

Indeed, the visual presents a group of three young boys of color, surrounded by cigarette butts, with a legend that hits the headlines: “Every cool place in Aalst has its killjoy”. The legend, coupled with the photo, makes the inhabitants jump. “Why three young black boys? Come on…”. “The way it’s presented is really exaggerated. It’s too much. Really too much, it has nothing to do with the origin!”launch two residents, questioned in the streets.

But then how did this poster end up in the streets? The mayor himself said he was surprised, having absolutely not validated this particular visual. “Personally, I had a very critical look at this poster. It’s my personal opinion. I wouldn’t have authorized it, but it’s the first time it’s happened in a city that communicates a lot”says Christoph D’Haese, who promises a communal discussion on this kind of problem, to prevent such a problem from arising once more.

The poster has already been removed in the face of controversy.
