This summer, the president of the MR (which is part of the local majority) Georges-Louis Bouchez announced that the MR would not support the Flemish socialist in the name of state neutrality. This Tuesday, the Center for Secular Action (CAL) also opposed such a designation, considering “that an executive mandate is incompatible with the manifestation of a personal conviction, whether religious, philosophical, political or partisan”. The appointment was finally successful due to the support of opposition elected officials (PTB, Ecolo). The vote by secret ballot ended with 20 yes, 16 no and one abstention. Many municipal councilors were conspicuous by their absence.

The president of the MR expressed in the wake of his disapproval on Twitter, denouncing “a new attack on the neutrality of the State and living together” and announcing that the MR was going to file “an appeal to the Minister of local authorities” . Bernard Clerfayt (Défi), who is the competent minister, indicated that his administration will examine the complaint or complaints filed. “But here, the question is not only regarding the legal aspect. It is first and foremost political. There was a majority in the municipal council of Molenbeek to elect him. If the MR remains in the majority, he de facto supports his action as alderman. Otherwise, if he does not support it, he must resign. Politically, it is therefore up to the MR to choose: his mandate or his program, ”comments his cabinet.
