The European Football Association (UEFA) has excluded a video assistant referee from officiating a Champions League match, following he awarded a controversial penalty kick to Paris Saint-Germain in a 1-1 draw once morest Newcastle United in the continental competition.
According to what UEFA said, Polish Tomas Kwiatkowski was scheduled to be the video assistant referee in the match between Real Sociedad and Austria’s Red Bull Salzburg, in Group D, but he is now excluded.
His exclusion comes following Kylian Mbappe scored a penalty kick in the eighth minute of stoppage time, giving Saint-Germain a point once morest Newcastle in Paris, in an important match in the fifth round of Group F, a result that deprived the English team of a remarkable victory, and left it on the verge of Exit from the group stage.
Newcastle was leading 1-0 when Polish referee Simon Marciniak was summoned by his compatriot Kwiatkowski to consult and review pictures of a possible handball in the penalty area on Newcastle player Tino Liveramento.
A penalty kick was awarded despite the shot being of questionable authenticity, while a similar handball on Newcastle player Lewis Miley was ignored earlier in the match.
Team coach Eddie Howe described the penalty kick as a “bad decision” when he spoke following the match.
