In the sixth minute of stoppage time, things got dangerous once more in the Manchester United penalty area. After the Red Devils had already looked lethargic and sluggish in the previous 95 minutes, Pedro Neto once more took advantage of ManUnited’s negligence and smashed the ball into the box.
There Sasa Kalajdzic rose – and was completely cleared by United keeper André Onana. The ball was no longer within reach, the Cameroonian goalkeeper crashed into his Austrian opponent unchecked.
Wolverhampton coach Gary O’Neil was furious and ran towards the fourth official. But despite his efforts, despite the clarity of the scene – the whistle didn’t come.
Referee Simon Hooper did move towards the sidelines, but not to inspect the video images. Rather, he cautioned O’Neil with a yellow card and allowed the game to continue. Meanwhile, the video referee viewed the images but did not contact Hooper.
O’Neil ‘not surprised’ at wrong decision
After the game, O’Neil praised his side for their efforts but didn’t hide his anger at the missed penalty.
“It looked like the goalkeeper tried to cut off the striker’s head,” he told Sky Sports UK. “At least that’s how it looked live. When I look at it now, it still looks that way.”
O’Neil was “not really surprised” that the scene went unpunished. “I understand it, but I don’t accept it,” he continued, criticizing the handling of the video evidence. “We can’t just leave it at the factual decision on the pitch because it’s just a tough decision.”
Sky Sports UK pundit Gary Neville agreed with O’Neil and called for a penalty. “Onana wasn’t anywhere near the ball,” said the former Man United player. “He wanted to disrupt his opponents as much as possible and take the striker out of the game. That’s a penalty for not being close enough to the ball.”
