Since then, the chaos on the Nationale 4 between Erpent and Jambes has increased with the creation of a traffic lane reserved for buses. More than the construction site, it is the purpose of the developments which is called into question by many users, residents of neighboring neighborhoods and traders.
A petition, launched last week by a committee of local residents, has recorded nearly 900 signatures at this stage. The accompanying comments are scathing and target both the Region and the City. Which adapted the Erpent mobility plan validating the one-way design of certain streets in particular. The cartload in the village is drastically increased, comments the annoyed Erpentois.
They received the support of Maxime Prévot who, upset at not having received a ministerial response to his last letter, expressed his dismay in a video published on social networks. “Please Philippe, open your eyes to the extremely problematic situation we are experiencing in terms of mobility on the N4!” implored the mayor.
New cycle path surprises motorists: “It’s indeed surprising when you see it for the first time”
Arrange the interchange
Did the plea have the desired effect? Philippe Henry’s office sent us a copy of the response he sent to Maxime Prévot at the beginning of the week. The elected environmentalist recalls that “this project was designed in collaboration with […] the City of Namur, the OTW (Wallonia transport operator) and other partners. It is part of Namur’s Communal Mobility Plan, calling for alternatives to be found to the growing saturation of road traffic. specify that in parallel with the interventions on the N4, interchange 18 located upstream, will be modified in order to favor traffic on the E411. “This intervention will limit the flow of vehicles towards the N4 and will distribute traffic over the other three motorway exits from Namur (exit 15 to Loyers, exit 14 towards the Center and exit 13 towards Champion).”
Transitional measures far from guaranteed
Philippe Henry also discusses the adaptations to the system which were granted until the commissioning of the future P + R of Erpent, in 2026. Motorists have obtained authorization to continue to use the two traffic lanes in the portion between the intersections with rue de Velaine and rue de Géronsart, in the direction of descent only. However, nothing was won, to the great displeasure of the mayor of Namur. These transitional measures are in fact dependent on an analysis whose results are expected on November 13, says Philippe Henry. It is therefore possible that automobile traffic on a lane will already be effective within a few weeks.
Regardless of the configuration that emerges from the study, TEC vehicles must remain on the portion of the axis indicated to them by ground markings. A rule which is, it seems, not fully respected at this stage. “It comes to our attention that buses sometimes abandon the lane dedicated to them. We will contact the OTW so that drivers are made aware of the proper use of traffic lanes,” concludes Philippe Henry’s office.
